This is one of the great maps of Sydney, produced at the start of the gold rush and the subsequent boom in population and economic growth. This beautifully detailed map shows many of the great houses and estates surrounding the city beginning to be subdivided for housing, as new suburbs like Balmain, Glebe, Redfern, Chippendale and Paddington emerge on the city fringes. The first stage of the Sydney to Goulburn railway, the Parramatta passenger service, is under construction, and opened the following year in 1855.
