Following the famous voyage of Charles Darwin (1831-1836), the HMS Beagle embarked on a third voyage to survey the coasts of Australia (1837-1841). Talented artist and naturalist James Barker Emery (1794-1891) recorded these exquisite water colours of Australia fish species, which today are held in the State Libary of South Australia. They are treasures of natural history...As well as their survey duties, the officers recorded details of the landscape, the Aborigines, and the flora and fauna, all of which added to the accumulated knowledge of Australia.
