In 1824 the British government instructed the Governor of New South Wales Thomas Brisbane to occupy Norfolk Island as a place to send “the worst description of convicts”, and a second attempt at settlement began in 1825–1855. This period featured a program of building works, much of which form the visible ruins and buildings of the World Heritage Listed ‘Kingston and Arthur Vale Historic Area’ today. Transportation to NSW was abolished in 1850, and to Van Diemen’s Land in 1853.⁣..(From the original in the Archives Office of New South Wales)⁣
