Date 1888

A snapshot of Sydney at the height of the1880s boom, this spectacular map shows the city centre from Circular Quay to King Street, and George Street to Macquarie Street. At lower left the newly formed Martin Place fronts the new General Post Office. The recently built electric tram runs down Elizabeth & Phillip Streets. Shipping and ferry wharfs, stores, hotels, clubs, public buildings are shown in highly informative detail, as are building owners' names with a 'Reference' denoting buildings in brick or stone, wood, iron, house numbers, number of stories and tram stopping places. Published during the centenary of European settlement, the map is decoratively surrounded by vignettes of prestigious sandstone buildings and monuments. Advertisements have 3 digit phone numbers...This republished version can be printed at a range of sizes, however, the original, held in the National Library, is very large at 195 x 139 cm, and contains extensive detailed information. A very attractive map.
