A fascinating map showing the hazardous nature of colonial shipping published by Merchant Shipping & Underwriters Association. The map records wrecks as Total Loss, Badly Damaged, or by Collision. One of the worst records is at Manning River on the NSW north coast, a toll surpassed only at Kaipara, NZ, where in the single year of 1885 four ships were total losses and another two were salvaged badly damaged.
