One of the oldest cities in Australia, Launceston was settled by Europeans in 1806 and is situated on the junction of the North Esk, South Esk and Tamar rivers. Its beautiful serene setting and picturesque historic buildings today contrast with an early history if harsh frontier living, the barborous treatment of aborigines, and wholesale slaughter of seals in Bass Strait.
