Creator John Arrowsmith

Date 1841

Port Arthur 1841, site of the brutal penal settlement for the most hardened British criminals transported to the colony, was established on the rugged and isolated Tasman Peninsula in 1833.⁣.⁣⁣.⁣Eaglehawk Neck, a 30m wide isthmus connecting to the mainland, reinforced the inaccessibility of the peninsula. To deter escapees, it was said to be surrounded by shark infested waters. The narrow Eaglehawk Neck was fenced, guarded by soldiers and and half-starved dogs. Today the site is world heritage listed.⁣
