'Mosman's Bay Refreshment Rooms' greeted daytrippers alighting from the ferry at Mosman, then a relatively remote but popular picnic spot on the harbour's north shore. In the 1890s, when this image was captured, artists' colonies in the area were the resort of young painters like Tom Roberts and Arthur Streeton who resided in Curlew Camp at little Sirius Cove. At this time, the sleepy suburb of Mosman was more bushland than houses.
Charles Henry Kerry (1857-1928), one of Australia’s best early photographers, captured remarkable scenes of 19th century colonial life in the city and the bush.
