Birdseye view of Melbourne ... 'From official surveys and from sketches taken in 1854 by G. Teale'..Lithograph shows the extraordinary growth of the city within 20 years of European settlement. The topography in the image is a little exaggerated but all the elements are there such as Hoddle’s Grid forming the city centre, the docks at The Basin and The Falls, Batman’s Hill, the newly opened Port Melbourne Hobsons Bay Railway (the first public line in Australia), Flinders St Station, and the stately Princes Bridge connecting St Kilda Road to Swanston Street, surrounded by swamps at Southbank and the newly established Botanical Gardens of Victoria.
