Date 1912

In 1912 the Sydney Harbour Trust published ambitious plans to develop Darling Harbour and the wharves around Pyrmont into a vast industrial container port. The railway brought freight from the far corners of the state into the port, and continuous elevated conveyer system ran along the shores of Darling Harbour, Johnston's Bay, Blackwattle Bay, Rozelle Bay and White Bay. Even a harbour tunnel was proposed from Millers Point to Balmain. ..The government's Sydney Harbour Trust jumped at the chance to resume outdated private wharfage and waterfront properties, following the outbreak of bubonic plague in 1901, which allowed the government to meet the needs of a massive increase in tonnage of modern steel shipping. The infrastructure that was built dominated the area for most of the 20th century...Today, the trains are gone, wharf buildings have been converted into upmarket apartment, offices and entertainment buildings, and much of the foreshores have been restored to landscaped public recreation reserves. The railway link to Rozelle has become a charming light rail system winding through this pretty working and residential locality of Sydney Harbour.
