Creator Sands & McDougall
Date 1888
Map showing Horse tramways, Cable tramways, and railways and stations. The original is large and beautifully detailed...Sands & McDougall's first tramway map of Melbourne set the standard for what would become their staple 'New' Sands tramway map in succeeding editions for decades to come. This one, circa 1880s, captures a cartographic snapshot of the city at the height of the land boom, when Melbourne (wealthiest city in the Southern Hemisphere at the time) began to turn 'marvellous'...The city grid extends into the hinterland keeping up with speculation and rapid population growth. What would become one of its finest legacies, Melbourne's 19th century urban park network is evident.
