Creator Ms. Maund (1790–1863)

Date 1842

Native to southeastern Australia, the waratah is the floral emblem of New South Wales. The name 'waratah' comes from the Eora Aboriginal people, the original inhabitants of the Sydney area...The Showy Waratah from Benjamin Maund's 'The Botanist' (1836-1842). The illustrations for Maund's publication were prepared by several women artists, including his two daughters. This fine waratah engraving was originally drawn by Miss Maund. Little biographical information is recorded about these talented women.
