The eastern bettong (Bettongia gaimardi) originally ranged across southeastern Australia and eastern Tasmania, was hunted to extinction on the mainland by foxes by the 1920s. Listed as a Near Threatened species, an important conservation program to breed betttongs has been established in Canberra. (Syn Bettongia cuniculus: Gould)
