This wonderful marine mammal, more closely related to the elephant than any other creature, belongs to the 'Sirenia' order of animals; the mythological name referring to mermaids, for which they were often mistaken by lonely sailors on long voyages. The French scientists, perhaps also attracted by seductive calling of the Sirenia, focussed here on its reproductive anatomy...Comte Jules Dumont d’Urville sailed to Sydney, Hobart and large parts of the Australian coast as part of a lavish expedition of scientific discovery in the Australia-Pacific region, including New Zealand and the East Indies. The scientific illustrations are extraordinarily fine. ⁣The account of the Voyage of the Astrolabe was published in 1835. The Bat here represented is certainly one he very least of the Australian members of the family, for it scarcely exceeds in size the European Pipistrelle. It was my usual practice to look around during the last half-hour of daylight for Bats, at which to discharge the contents of of my gun before retiring to my tent, and by this means several species were collected which might otherwise even now be unknown in Europe. It was not, however, always necessary to shoot this little animal, for it is very tame, and my black attendants often amused themselves by cutting it down with a switch [small branch] as it passed before them, or rapidly skimmed over the water, a frequent habit with it. Called the Funerary Vampire 'Iteropus funereus' by Gold...Gould wrote of explorer Ludwig Leichhardt's encounter with the Black flying fox (near Mataranka, NT) on the 1844-46 expedition from Brisbane across northern Australia: 'So numerous did they become on the latter part of the journey that "twelve were brought for luncheon, thirty more were procured during the afternoon, and at least fifty were left wounded and hanging to the trees; upon another occasion they were seen clustering in such numbers that branches of the low trees drooped with their weight so near the ground, that they could eaily be killed with cudgels. In the neighbourhood of the river Roper, myriads were suspended in thick clusters on the highest trees, in the most shady and rather moist parts of the valley; they started as the travellers passed, and the flapping of their large membranous wings pruduced a sound like a hail storm." Doctor Leichardt went the next day with two of his party to the spot where they had seen the greatest nmber, and while he was examining the neighbouring trees his companions shot sixty-seven, of which fifty-five were brought to the camp and served for dinner, breakfast and luncheon, each of the party receiving eight.'

Source: Smithsonian Library

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0091/2572/4256/products/4883cbcac393abd9dbdf61e65ed1cf9e.jpg?v=1616675758
rakali-fulvous-beaver-rat-water-rat
Rakali, 'Fulvous Beaver-rat', Water Rat

Creator Gould's Mammals of Australia (1845-1863)

Date 1863

The Rakali, or Water Rat (Hydromys chrysogaster) was once hunted for its soft fur and considered a pest animal, until a protection order in 1938. A campaign in the 1980s to rename the water rat by indigenous name, Rakali, was successfully reversed the stigma attached to this native Australian rodent. With a body size of around 30cm, Rakalis live in burrows on the banks of rivers, lakes and estuaries and feed on aquatic insects, fish, crustaceans, mussels, snails, frogs, birds' eggs and water birds.
